I have been enjoying George Lewis’ 2008 book on the AACM- A Power Stronger Than Itself:The AACM and American Experimental Music (University of Chicago Press).

I have been a long fan of this collective’s work over the years, beginning with seeing the Art Ensemble of Chicago in the early ’80s in Buffalo then later seeing Leo Smith, Fred Anderson, Wadada Leo Smith and finally Lewis himself, but I wasn’t aware of all of the members or of the structure of the organization.

A fascinating and essential read for anyone interested in post-jazz “Great Black Music”. Though they may not have been directly influenced by the AACM, it is not hard to see the impetus behind the collective spirit of New York’s Downtown Scene in the 1980s and the Instant Composer’s Pool in the Netherlands as drawing from the same ideal as the AACM.
